About Me
Technology, Volunteerism, and Family.
I earned the callsign KB3ZLS in 2012. Getting my ticket was something that interested me from a young age. Two of my uncles were licensed hams when I was growing up. I was always fascinated by radio and loved playing with walkie talkies as a kid. I never realized how my worlds would collide. I’ve long enjoyed volunteering to serve my community. After getting licensed, I started participating in public service events providing communications support and loved that part of the hobby.
In 2010, I started my journey into Search and Rescue. I earned my certification for ground search in 2011 and had my first search that winter. Over time, I grew more involved in SAR becoming a K9 Handler and eventually combining two hobbies as the lead for communications for Chesapeake Search Dogs. Today, I continue to advise Chesapeake Search Dogs on technology and communications but spend my SAR career with my first team: Maryland Natural Resources Police Reserve Officers.
This blog will outline my radio projects with some side-trips down SAR technology and the lessons learned. I’ll try to recount some historical projects but focus on what’s new.
